Animal Breeder Job and Responsibilities

Animal Breeder Job and ResponsibilitiesAnimal Breeder Job and ResponsibilitiesAnimal breeders are responsible for producing animals that may be used for a variety of purposes including companionship, show, sport, or consumption. Duties Animal breeders use their knowledge of genetics and conformation to select breeding stock that will produce superior offspring. Successful animal breeders try to promote valuable traits (for example high milk production in dairy cows) when planning their breedings. The usual duties for animal breeders include facilitating breedings by live cover or artificial insemination, assisting with difficult births, maintaining cages or enclosures, feeding, administering supplements or medications, treating minor injuries, and keeping detailed health and pedigree records. Animal breeders often work in conjunction with large animal, equine, or small animal veterinarians to maintain proper health of the breeding stock and their offspring. Breeders may also show their stock in a variety of judged breed shows and competitive events. Both companion animals and livestock breeds may gain additional value as breeding stock if they demonstrate their superiority on the show circuit. A dog that wins best in show at the famed Westminster show, for example, would command a very significant stud fee in the show dog breeding industry. Career Options Animal breeders can specialize by working with a particular species (either for commercial production or companion/competition purposes). Some of the most popular areas of specialization involve producing dogs, cats, horses, cattle, goats, sheep, rabbits, fish, exotic birds, reptiles, or poultry. Many breeders narrow their focus even further by becoming experts at producing one specific breed within their species of choice. Breeders may further specialize within their breed of choice by selecting in favor of wertmiger zuwachs for a particular purpose. For example, some Quarter Horse breeders select for a body type that promotes speed and racing ability, while others select for another body type so that their foals will be able to compete successfully in halter show classes. Animal breeders may be self-employed or work as an employee of a major commercial farm or producer. Both full time and part time positions are possible. Education and Training While no formal degree is required for a career as an animal breeder, many in the industry have degrees in areas such as animal science, animal reproduction, or biology. Coursework for such degrees generally includes the study of subjects such as anatomy, physiology, reproduction, genetics, nutrition, and behavior. Courses in marketing, communication, and technology are also beneficial for aspiring breeders. Experience with the species and breed being produced tends to be of great importance. This necessary experience can be gained by judging or competing in breed shows, working for major producers, or completing a formal course of s tudy at the college level. Depending on the species they work with, animal breeders may need to develop specialized skills with regard to utilizing artificial insemination or live cover breeding techniques. Salary The annual earnings of an animal breeder can vary widely based on the type and quality of animal they are producing, its intended use, the current value of such animals, and the breeders reputation in the industry. The 2014 Bureau of Labor Statistics salary survey found that animal breeders earned a mean salary of $43,470 ($20.90 per hour). The highest mean salaries for animal breeders were found in New York ($52,180), Wisconsin ($42,210), California ($39,240), and Kentucky ($36,900).It is not coincidental that these states include some of the largest livestock production centers in the U.S. Some animal breeders choose to work only part-time while holding a full-time day job in another industry. These part-time breeders generally earn a significantly smaller income tha n full-time participants, though this is not always the case. Job Outlook Slow but steady job growth in the field of animal breeding is expected, with more significant signs of growth likely in the livestock industry. Specialty breeders of performance animals (such as show dogs or horses) should also see continued growth in their segments of the industry. Part-time breeders will also continue to make a contribution to the industry while holding full-time positions in other fields. The animal breeding industry is easily accessible as a part-time endeavor, especially when the breeder is interested in becoming involved with the production of companion animal breeds. Breeders are encouraged to use discretion when selecting animals for breeding purposes and to not allow inferior representatives of the species to contribute to the gene pool. Superior progeny will enhance an animal breeders reputation and ensure their continued success.

Why you should be eating dandelions, according to a medical advisor

Why you should be eating dandelions, according to a medical advisorWhy you should be eating dandelions, according to a medical advisorTaraxacum, native to Eurasia and North America, is a species of plants belonging to the family Asteraceae, that consists of flowers commonly known as dandelions, a corruption of the French word dent-de-lion, which translates to lions tooth. The author behind this correlation is unknown, so we can only speculate that its reasoning had something to do with the flowers serrated leaves vaguely resembling teeth, just as its head sort of calls a lions mane to mind.Medicinally, the perennial herb is fruchtwein often associated with Ancient China. The early physicians called it Xin Xiu Ben Cao or Pu Gong Yin, prophetically perceiving the weeds ability to fight free radicals, cleanse the liver of toxins, and its potency as an effective diuretic.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Ne uroscience, and moreThe citizens of ancient Rome and Greecetook note of the culinary benefits of dandelions, a tradition that has remained a staple in the latters culture, chiefly through a dish called Radhika. The Grecians, who gave the plant its official name, defined it as traxos, meaning disorder, and akos, meaning remedy Taxicum Offinale. The civilizations appreciation for the roots corrective powers is evidenced in its rich mythology. Theseus, the warrior-father of Athens, only found the strength to defeat the mighty minotaur, after the goddess of magic, Hecate, fed him dandelions for 30 days. The irony of the wildflowers studied curative properties is that they thrive best in disturbed habitats, conquering cleared spaces sans the threat of competing plant species. Moreover, dandelions do not require pollination to grow, asexually producing between 53 and 172 seeds per head. In the battler plants 13 year lifespan, it can produce up to 65,000 seeds and can regrow if any semblanc e of its taproot survives. The faulen age has looked favorably at the purported therapeutic merits of the plant, with herbalist seemingly fattening the list of health benefits and methods of extracting them every year. Dr. Richard Honaker, who is the Chief Medical Advisor at Your Doctors Online, is intimately familiar with the taxonomy of dandelions and was kind enough to impart some of his insights to Ladders. The Priests CrownThe medical community has been experiencing a similar nostalgia trend as the entertainment one people cant stop grousing about. Ladders recently reported on the celebrated return of the Nordic Diet, the fiber enhanced, sugar and fat limited correction of the western diet. Or take Maggot therapy, officially approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration in 2004 as a means to treat serious infections, first adopted by Maya Native Americans and Aboriginal tribes in Australia. Many of the early peoples first stabs at medicine were certainly clumsy, by as far as bo tany is concerned, I wager that the majority had the right idea. Herbalist and traditional medicine both seem to agree. According to Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, dandelions have more Vitamin A than spinach, more Vitamin C than tomatoes and have high levels of calcium, potassium, and iron in addition to being a great remedy for a hangover, since they help flush hangover-inducing toxins from the liver. Dandelions are actually more nutritious than most vegetables.Because the plants are burdened by the pesky weeds moniker, the organization fears that the measures taken to mitigate their growth are beginning to have adverse effects on wildlife. Dr. Hornaker shares in this fear. Around 80 millions pounds of pesticides are used on American lawns annually, killing 7 million wild birds each year as a result. Dandelions are a great source of nectar for pollinators, saying nothing of their influence on the re-hydration effect. Their thick roots loosen the soil, aerating the earth and severely reducing erosion. Eradicating tracicum species not only ensures a steady decline of pollinators, but its also dismissive of the potential to obtain vital and important nutrients.Dandelions are a good source of Vitamin A. Just 100 grams of dandelions has the same amount of Vitamin A as one-third of a sweet potato or half a cup of carrots. Vitamin A has been linked to maintaining good eye health. One study published determined that dandelions can kill leukemia cells. Dandelions can also cause death in aggressive pancreatic cells. One study showed anti-colon cancer benefits in mice testing. Several studies have suggested that dandelionsmay protect against liver damage,Honaker explained to Ladders. The flower, sometimes referred to as the priests crown, can be used to make soups, teas and even coffee. Dandelion salad was a popular fixture during the great depression era of America, by reason of its easy accessibility and its simple preparation. Be sure to wash extens ively or to harvest from privately owned property to avoid pesticide poisoning. How to eat dandelionsBelow youll find Dr.Hornaker instructions on proper doses respective to methods of imbibing.Fresh leaves 410 grams, daily.Dried leaves 410 grams, daily.Leaf tincture 0.41 teaspoon (25 ml), three times a day.Fresh leaf juice 1 teaspoon (5 ml), twice daily.mutabel extract 12 teaspoon (510 ml), daily.Fresh roots 28 grams, daily.Dried powder 2501,000 mg, four times a day.

This Years Top Accounting and Finance Jobs

This Years Top Accounting and Finance Jobs This Years Top Accounting and Finance Jobs For professionals working in accounting and finance jobs, it’s no secret you’re good with numbers. And your skills have paid off, because the numbers are now being good to you. The latest Salary Guide from Robert Half indicates there's a strong demand for skilled talent in today’s market for top accounting and finance jobs, with salaries continuing to increase. If you're a job seeker, that should be music to your ears, and if you're a manager trying to hire in this thriving market, it means your job will be more challenging. What are hot accounting and finance jobs, and why are they growing in importance? Here's a look at some of the top positions and what’s driving the demand for these roles: Financial analysts Two of the top accounting and finance jobs that offer excellent opportunities are financial analyst and senior financial analyst. The demand for skilled candidates to fill these positions is being driven by companies’ greater reliance on analytics. Firms are now looking for ways to use big data to manage resources and increase revenue more efficiently. They need finance employees who can prepare and analyze that data and make the numbers meaningful to management. Additionally, the number of analytics tools continues to increase, and their quality keeps improving. As companies upgrade these tools and their enterprise resource planning systems (ERPs), they need to hire more expert assistance to get the best results. A financial analyst with one to three years of experience can expect a midpoint salary of $67,000, according to the 2019 Robert Half Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance Professionals. The midpoint salary at the higher levels can be anywhere from $82,500 for a senior financial analyst to $102,500 for a financial analyst manager and $130,000 for a director. At the midpoint, candidates have average experience with the necessary skills to meet the job requirements, and the role may be in an industry where competition for talent is moderate. Internal and external auditors Internal and external auditors are also in great demand, and the supply of candidates for these accounting and finance jobs often isn’t meeting employers’ needs. As a result, external auditing firms snatch up top candidates as soon as they graduate. And because fewer people are completing accounting degrees today, the talent pool is dwindling further. As financial services firms encounter more regulations, internal auditor careers offer growing opportunities. Many banks and insurance companies are hiring auditors, in some cases from other organizations. This approach takes even more professionals from the supply chain. Corporate accounting also rely heavily on its internal auditors. According to the Salary Guide, the midpoint salary for an internal auditor in corporate accounting with one to three years of experience is $71,000. The room for growth in this sector is large, with chief audit executives earning a midpoint salary of $179,250. Senior and staff accountants We’re also seeing a great demand for senior and staff accountants. There are a few factors fueling the need for these professionals. The first is that the unemployment rate for college-educated finance pros is lower than the average to begin with. Additionally, it now takes five years of college to earn an accounting degree plus your CPA designation. This can be daunting to students and dissuade them from going into accounting. At the same time, many finance professionals are retiring, so there are more people leaving the field than there are entering. The combination of these three factors results in a dearth in senior and staff accounting candidates, as not only are there fewer individuals on the market, but fewer are entering the field as well. Midpoint salaries for staff accountants in corporate accounting with one to three years of experience is $62,000, according to the Salary Guide. Senior accountants can expect a midpoint salary of $77,750. Accounting operations Accounting operations - accounts payable, accounts receivable, bookkeeping, payroll, credit and collections - positions, which require two-year degrees, are also among the top jobs available. Here again, the law of supply and demand is in effect. The number of available candidates is simply smaller than the number of employees retiring. Operational support salaries range from a billing clerk, with a midpoint salary of $34,750, and inventory analyst, at $47,500, to AR/AP manager, with a $61,750 midpoint salary, according to the Salary Guide. Top accounting and finance jobs Naturally, top jobs will differ by location, and so will their salaries, which vary widely from city to city. Whether you are a job seeker or a hiring manager, you probably want to know: What accounting and finance jobs are hot in your city, and what's the going rate in your area? Visit the Salary Center, where you'll be able to get your own copy of the Salary Guide - and adjust salaries for top accounting and finance jobs in your city. USE THE SALARY CALCULATOR

Public Interest Law Career Skills and Characteristics

Public Interest Law Career Skills and Characteristics Public Interest Law Career Skills and Characteristics Public interest lawyers and non-lawyers provide legal services to individuals, groups, and organizations that are historically unrepresented in society. Studies show that about 80% of the legal needs of the poor in the United States remain unmet, despite existing federal, state and volunteer programs that provide legal services to low-income people. Public interest lawyers, paralegals, law students, and legal professionals provide legal services free of charge or for a substantially lower fee to underserved segments of the public such as the indigent, the elderly and others who cannot afford legal services. Public interest law professionals also fight for the underdog: they seek to enact policy change, advocate for civil liberties and fight for environmental protection, consumer rights and other causes for the betterment of society. Pro bono work is a form of public interest work; law firm and corporate legal employees volunteer their time to offer free legal services for the greater good. How to navigate the workplace when youre the youngest one

How to navigate the workplace when you’re the youngest one How to navigate the workplace when you’re the youngest one Landing a new gig always marks a pivotal time in your career. Your smarts, personality, and work ethic got you here, and the unique perspective you bring as a young professional is an asset - until it’s not.As a recent college grad starting out in my career, I was bubbling with new ideas. My coworkers welcomed me, but some didn’t always welcome my suggestions. When I spoke up in meetings, my ideas were regularly dismissed as “not possible,” “too ambitious,” or “not something we’ve done before.” Valid feedback, sure, and my older coworkers meant well. They were, after all, speaking from experience. Still, I felt tuned out and frustrated. What if my ideas, and the ideas and feedback of countless other young professionals, were respected and considered, despite our age? Or better yet, because of it?If you’re the youngest person at your workplace right now, it is totally possible for you to answer this question with a resounding YES. Here’s some advice on navigatin g the workplace when you’re young, ambitious, and want to be heard.Embrace itOwning who you are, including the date on your driver’s license, is key to channeling confidence. At the same time, it’s important to recognize your older coworkers’ perspectives. View such perspectives as information, not emotional catalysts - don’t take it personally. Understanding the situation from all angles and with an objective focus will make it easier to address it head-on.Turn it aroundWhile being regularly tuned out in meetings and dismissed as too young or inexperienced by older coworkers is discouraging, you can turn the situation around. Here’s the flipside: Mentorship. “When you’re the youngest person in the office, you have the opportunity to seek out guidance from older colleagues,” said Elizabeth, an attorney. “These colleagues value growth and adaptability, and chances are they see your potential.” They have the experience, and maybe even the job title, you want som eday. Seek them out when working on a project or preparing for a presentation, and bounce your ideas off them. It never hurts to refine your ideas, and who knows? As you build rapport, you may find you have an ally in the next meeting who will speak up on behalf of your ideas.Come preparedSpend time preparing for meetings by jotting down ideas and supportive data, and even thinking of potential arguments against them and how you’ll respond. Objections may stem from incomplete understanding, so do your homework and be prepared for any naysaying.Be undeterredPersistence is key. “Don’t let not being heard keep you from continuing to speak up,” said Abby, who works in project management. Your supervisors will notice your effort, even if your contributions end up on the cutting room floor. Remember, too, that there’s no such thing as a bad idea. Reflect on the objections you heard and learn from them, so you’re ready for the next meeting.Lean inLean into what makes you truly happy in your career. Your passion will be what motivates you through these challenging situations. It will remind you that all your persistence and professionalism will pay off, and maybe someday, when the roles are reversed, you’ll have the opportunity to share these experiences with another young professional. This  article  first appeared on  The EveryGirl.

7 Best Books to Boost Your Career - The Muse

7 Best Books to Boost Your Career - The Muse 7 Best Books to Boost Your Career - The Muse Here at The Muse, we spend a lot of time talking about careers. Whether it’s how to start it, change it, or enhance it, we’ve thought about it all. So, it probably comes as no surprise that we also spend plenty of time reading about how we can move further along our own paths. Below, our team shares seven of their favorite recent reads and explains how their picks have helped them do their jobs (even) better. 1. Dot Complicated: Untangling Our Wired Lives by Randi Zuckerberg I’m currently reading Dot.Complicated by Randi Zuckerberg. I love reading about her perspective on tech-life balance and stories about Facebook’s early days. This is great for anyone who’s interested in learning more about the company’s history and for anyone who is craving to understand how technology’s changing the way people interact with each other. Jessica Huang, Account Executive 2. Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport The point of the book is to better understand how distraction and shallow tasks take away from us producing our bigger projects- i.e., the deep work, strategic thinking, new ideas- that we’re really hired to do. What Newport calls ‘deep work’ is the opposite of the environment we have by default in most offices. The book is about building repeatable rituals to overcome those defaults, with practical methods like time blocking, fixed scheduling, systematically saying no to different obligations, and how to make the most of your unconscious mind. (Quick tip: Give it room to breathe rather than pulling out a screen.) Shahzad Ahsan, Demand Generation Manager 3. Power Questions: Build Relationships, Win New Business, and Influence Others by Andrew Sobel and Jerold Panas Right now I’m focused on improving my ability to better understand clients and guide them to realize that they want and need. This book succinctly walks through insightful and original questions to boost a business conversation or how to improve a personal relationship. It’s an easy read and extremely actionable. Daniel Ratner, Account Executive 4. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo It’s not a traditional career book, but I’m finding it very applicable in both my career and life. I’m personally always feeling bogged down and overwhelmed by all the things I have to do. This book is teaching me that by decluttering my physical things, I create more space for things that matter. Similarly, she has a lot of good nuggets of positive thinking advice about tidying up your mental state. By creating space in your physical life, you’re freeing up mental space to pursue the things you love and were made for! Jena Viviano, Account Executive 5. Covert Persuasion: Psychological Tactics and Tricks to Win the Game by Kevin Hogan and James Speakman It was recommended to me when I was asking around for a great sales read to help me improve in my role here at The Muse. One of the best takeaways I got was how to turn a ‘no’ into a ‘yes’ by focusing on practical tools that work. One thing I’ll say after reading a lot of sales books is that they’re not just for people in sales. After reading Daniel Pink’s To Sell Is Human (another great read), you realize everyone, in one way or another, is in sales and can benefit from these books. Dara Meyer, Account Executive 6. The Compass of Zen by Seung Sahn It seems tangentially relevant since I see mindfulness, and sometimes meditation, mentioned a lot in career advice or personal growth writing. But in these writings, direct references to Buddhism sometimes get filtered out to keep folks from turning away. I don’t think that’s always necessary, and I’ve generally found the more ‘unfiltered’ source material a lot more helpful regarding personal growth and very relevant to daily life. Chris Ryan, Data Scientist 7. Primed to Perform: How to Build the Highest Performing Cultures Through the Science of Total Motivation by Neel Doshi and Lindsay McGregor It applies data and metrics to the elusive and hard to measure importance of company culture. As The Muse is scaling, the more we understand about how our culture is developing, the better prepared we’ll be to keep making it stronger and to keep attracting driven and high-performing Musers. How to find your tribe in 10 simple steps

How to find your tribe in 10 simple steps How to find your tribe in 10 simple steps Finding your “tribe,” your people, your peeps, the folks with whom you connect, is doable, but not always a simple task. Sometimes it starts as a collection of friendships from decades past. Other times you may find set or subset groups with which you resonate right away. Most times, and only after a series of trial and error, do you discover what clicks, what connects and what works. Tweaks are continual in order to stay relevant and synergistic with the folks you are trying to serve.Whatever the case, it is important to surround yourself with powerful and supportive people who encourage you to be your best self because when you finally find your tribe, it can foster tremendous growth, both personally and professionally. Some people seem to naturally attract others to them, but for others, it’s more challenging. In any case, there are some simple rules to remember when it comes to finding your tribe.First, know who you areBefore you find your crew, you must know yourself. You do n’t know with whom you resonate if you don’t know what your core message is. Become comfortable with yourself and from there you will attract people that best match your ideals and are interested in your ideas. Don’t change yourself to fit a model; be yourself and become your own model. You will feel valued and most successful with a tribe that best matches the qualities you imbibe.Know what you needWhile you should certainly be considerate to everyone who crosses your path, that doesn’t mean everyone you meet is going to be a good fit for your tribe. What qualities are you looking for in a friend, supporter or mentor? Are you looking for a good listener? Do you want someone who can provide emotional support? Are you seeking knowledge to move your career or hobby or other ambition to the next level? Know what you are really looking for and feel fully confident about seeking out ideal “partnerships.”Different tribes for different needsDo you need strong friendships that h old you accountable to a higher goal or standard? Or are you looking for friends with whom to share common interests or just have fun? Maybe you need help sticking to resolutions you have made for the New Year five month ago? It’s okay to have one tribe for more personal matters and a different tribe that aligns more with your professional life. Some of those folks may even intersect. The point is, there is a tribe of like-minded people no matter what your need. And that’s a good thing.Be open to formal and informal relationshipsPerhaps you consider your office pal just a work friend, but if given the chance, could a deeper friendship blossom into a lifelong bond? Inversely, could a great “fun night out” friend be the most innovative future business partner ever? It can certainly be precarious territory to intersect at seemingly optimal crossroads, but stretching the borders of professional and personal can be successful. Of course, it requires proper boundary setting, clear and open communication, and absolute respect from all parties, but the potential payoff is certainly worth exploring.Introduce friends from different groupsInvite different friend groups to various functions. Intermingling of relationships is a great way for your tribe to expand and meet new people. Your new best friend is might be just one backyard barbecue away! When considering a career change, think of who youd shovel manure for

When considering a career change, think of who you'd shovel manure for When considering a career change, think of who you'd shovel manure for Are you at a crossroads, wondering if you should change careers, or at least jobs?Seeking one’s vocation in mid-career can be fraught. Time is always ticking. It feels absolutely critical not to make a mistake, because you can’t afford to waste time on the wrong thing, only to have to start anew a few years later when you’re even older. And so the months tick by, and you’re paralyzed by indecision, growing older anyway.I know what it feels like, and how liberating it is to come out on the other side. Not only have I experienced my own career transitions (two of them), but I’ve witnessed the churn others went through as they decided to derail their well-compensated careers to set out on a different course, ultimately living the lives they really wanted. A lawyer became a priest. An accountant became a health coach specializing in women’s body image issues. But the best story, hands down, belongs to my friend Laura (not her real name).Shoveling manure, from lawyer to safari g uideLaura has gone from being a law firm partner to becoming a licensed Southern Africa Field Guide - in other words, a safari guide.I take every opportunity to tell her story because I get to be cool by association, and it’s rare that a week goes by without a conversation about her.  More often than not, the response is “this is so awesome! I want her life.”Well, actually, no â€" you don’t (and neither do I).Most people don’t want to spend years volunteering at zoos,  sanctuaries, and research stations, frequently doing the standard work of volunteers: cleaning cages, prepping meals for animals, then cleaning more cages. To be clear: cleaning cages means scooping up a lot of manure all day. Most don’t want the strong smells, the dirt, being hot (or freezing cold) for weeks, sharing a cramped tent with a fellow trainee, with spotty internet connectivity to boot. And most really wouldn’t like spending nearly two months in 100-degree weather memorizing different birdcalls, plant leaves, and animal tracks, which is what you’d have to do to get the guide certification.Your true vocation will be painless, even if it’s challengingSince leaving the law a year ago, Laura’s life has been exciting, with amazing photographs of wildlife to document it.But it is also largely unglamorous. There’s dust, animal poop, outdoor showers with inadequate water pressure, instant coffee, homesickness, and venomous snakes and spiders. There’s a dearth of air conditioning, craft beer, hamburgers, and CrossFit.There are the annoyances that come with being in sweltering close quarters with other humans all the time. And yet, Laura wouldn’t trade any of this. This is all part of how she is becoming an expert in her chosen field of wildlife conservation. Laura is living her dream. She has found her vocation.Watching others find their paths may help us on our own searchFor me, I realized that my vocation has been so obvious as to be invisible. Only recently, as a resu lt of a weekend hanging out with Laura and philosophizing about life, did it dawn on me that I treat writing, especially on issues relating to how work life can be improved, like she treats animal conservation.Although our physical surroundings and hardships are very different, our understanding that we have to pay our dues is the same.We both know that we must acquire and apply new knowledge, and we are both OK with discomfort and setbacks. We both checked our egos at the start of our respective journeys, and are willing to approach the work with an apprentice’s mindset. How I found my ‘thing’I spent over a decade learning to write without expecting any reward other than writing better. I read my literary heroes forensically, asking what makes Thomas Mann’s stories so memorable, and Graham Greene’s sentences so crisp. For a more complete education, I also waded through a lot of bad, awful, no-good writing, flagging mistakes to avoid. And I had the privilege of working with professional editors,  who taught me to put my verbiage on a diet.Only in the last few years am I seeing external validation of these efforts. My novel was well reviewed. My articles were picked up by several publications, including this one. Others now ask me to edit their work and seek my advice on writing. But even though many aspects of writing have become easier, I still have some 12-hour days with nothing to show for them. A post doesn’t gel; a book chapter develops a sinkhole that swallows my entire plot. On many days, my behind goes numb from too much sitting, and my eyes have a dancing cursor in front of them when I go to sleep. But I come back the next day, again not knowing whether there will be work product at the end of it. I love it.This is how I know that writing is my thing, and helping others write better to develop their careers and businesses floats my boat.So if you’re casting about for your next undertaking, be it a new career or a dedicated hobby, ask yoursel f if there is anything for which you’re willing to do hard labor with no immediate rewards except for improving your skills. Your answer will point you to your true north.
